About Smart Foyer
Beginner, renter-friendly smart home: no-drill devices, easy routines and honest savings math.
Why this site exists
Smart Foyer publishes plain-English guides about beginner and renter-friendly smart home. The goal is simple: help you understand the options, avoid common mistakes, and choose something that fits how you will actually use it.
How we research and write
- Sources first. We work from manufacturer specifications, manuals, warranty terms, and reputable public sources, and we link to them where useful.
- No invented experiences. Unless an article explicitly says a product was used hands-on, it is a research-based guide, not a hands-on test.
- Dated and revisited. Every article shows a last-updated date. We revise guides when products, prices, or advice change.
- Corrections. Spotted an error? Tell us and we will fix it.
How we use AI tools
Some articles are drafted with the help of AI writing tools. Drafts are then fact-checked against sources and edited before publishing. AI is a writing aid here, not a substitute for research or a source of product experience.
How the site makes money
Right now the site doesn’t earn money: product links are plain links, not affiliate links, and there are no ads. In the future some links may become affiliate links, which would earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. That will never decide which products we recommend or how they are ranked. Details are in our disclaimer.
Where our technical advice comes from
Device behavior, setup steps and compatibility notes come from manufacturer manuals and support pages, the published specifications of the standards involved (Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread and Matter, from the Connectivity Standards Alliance and Thread Group), and public guidance such as the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Saver pages and the FTC’s consumer advice on securing connected devices. We don’t claim to have tested products we haven’t used, and we don’t publish star ratings or “best of” rankings based on hands-on testing.
A note for renters
Many of our guides focus on plug-in, stick-on and battery-powered devices that don’t require drilling or rewiring. Leases differ, so always check yours and ask your landlord before changing locks, wiring or anything attached to the building.
